Sharpening My Skills in Antwerp, The Diamond Capital
A Journey to Antwerp: My Time at Alexandre Setting School By McKenzie
Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Antwerp, Belgium, where I lived and studied for three months to complete an intensive diploma at the renowned Alexandre Optical Setting School. It was an experience that challenged and inspired me in ways I never imagined, and I’m so excited to bring those skills back home to our workshop in Peppermint Grove.
Antwerp is often called the world’s diamond capital, and for good reason. The city has a rich history in gem cutting, trading, and fine jewellery making, and it's home to some of the world’s most skilled setters. At the Alexandre Setting School, I was immersed in the fine art of gemstone setting, covering everything from classic techniques to some of the most intricate and modern styles used in high-end jewellery today. The course was incredibly hands-on, with long days at the bench, perfecting techniques like pavé, invisible, bezel, and micro-setting. Each day pushed my attention to detail and patience to a new level, and I loved every moment.
Working alongside talented jewellers from all around the world was another highlight. We shared ideas, compared techniques, and inspired each other. There’s something really special about being surrounded by people who are just as passionate about jewellery as you are.
Now that I’m back in the workshop, I’m already applying what I’ve learned to the custom pieces I create for our clients. Whether it’s a diamond engagement ring, a pendant, or a unique redesign, the precision and techniques I gained in Antwerp are helping me elevate every detail.
My time in Antwerp was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a significant milestone in my journey as a jeweller. I’m incredibly thankful to our amazing clients and the Peppermint Grove Jewellers community for your continued support, it means the world.
